Meta-inferences and Supervaluationism

چکیده

Abstract Many classically valid meta-inferences fail in a standard supervaluationist framework. This allegedly prevents supervaluationism from offering an account of good deductive reasoning. We provide proof system for logic which includes supervaluationistically acceptable versions the classical meta-inferences. The emerges naturally by thinking truth as licensing assertion, falsity negative assertion and lack truth-value rejection weak assertion. Moreover, respects well-known criteria admissibility inference rules. Thus, supervaluationists can Our moreover brings to light how one revise framework make room higher-order vagueness. prove that resulting is sound complete with respect consequence relation preserves model non-normal modal NT . Finally, we extend our approach first-order setting show treat vagueness same way at every order. failure conditional other crucial ingredient this treatment hence should be embraced, not lamented.

Supervaluationism and Classical Logic

The supervaluationist theory of vagueness provides a notion of logical consequence that is akin to classical consequence. In the absence of a definitely operator, supervaluationist consequence coincides with classical consequence. In the presence of ‘definitely ’, we might find counterexamples to classically valid patterns of inference within supervaluationist reasoning. Foes of supervaluationi...

Supervaluationism and Its Logics

If we adopt a supervaluational semantics for vagueness, what sort of logic results? As it turns out, the answer depends crucially on how the standard notion of validity as truth preservation is recasted. There are several ways of doing that within a supervaluational framework, the main alternative being between ‘global’ construals (e.g., an argument is valid if and only if it preserves truth-un...

Supervaluationism and necessarily borderline sentences

Pablo Cobreros University of Navarra Abstract The supervaluationist theory of vagueness is committed to a particular notion of logical consequence known as global validity. According to a recent objection, this notion of consequence is more problematic than is usually thought since i) it bears a commitment to some sort of bizarre inferences, ii) this commitment threatens the internal coherence ...

Ordering Supervaluationism, Counterpart eory, and Ersatz Fundamentality

Many philosophical theories make comparisons between objects, events, states of affairs, worlds, or systems, and many such theories deliver plausible verdicts only if some of the elements they compare are ranked as ‘best.’ When the relevant ordering does not have such ‘best’ or ‘tied for best’ elements the theory wrongly falls silent or gives badly counterintuitive results. I call these limit a...

Drawing generalized causal inferences based on meta-analysis.

Research syntheses are more and more used to inform decisionmakers about the effects of a particular policy or of different policy options. Are social influence prevention programs more effective with ...
